HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN HEALTHY CHOCOLATE

Not going to lie I am a bit of a chocoholic, chocolate is my weakness. So the best way for me not to pig out on it was to not have it in the house, trust me I could put away a whole block, of course we still have chocolate just not always. Now I have discovered a better cleaner way to eat chocolate, by making it myself.

Only three ingredients and a microwave and you will have a good substitute in the fridge ready for the evenings chocolate cravings. This kind of raw chocolate is packed with antioxidents, vitamins and minerals, ditching the trans fats, fillers emulsifiers and sugars that supermarket chocolate is so full of.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FIRST

What you need to know is the difference between cocoa powder and raw cacao powder, and it’s not just the spelling.

Raw cacao is made by cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans. The process keeps the living enzymes in the cocoa and removes the fat (cacao butter).

Cocoa looks the same but it’s not. Cocoa powder is raw cacao that’s been roasted at high temperatures. Why’s this bad? The roasting process changes the molecular structure of the cocoa bean, reducing the enzyme content and lowering the overall nutritional value.

HOW TO MAKE HEALTHY CHOCOLATE

Healthy Chocolate Method #1

Melt coconut oil, mix in raw cacao powder, and sweeten with stevia, mix and refrigerate. The one I have made below also has raw almonds added and natural peanut butter.

Healthy Chocolate Method #2

Buy 90% cocoa dark chocolate, melt and add equal parts coconut oil then sweeten with stevia. If you eat the 90% dark chocolate on its own it will taste like dirt, but this way it will taste much better.choc

Now this is will be like swapping from skim milk to full cream or butter to marg, it will taste different but you will get used to it. So much so that when you eat normal milk chocolate from the shop full of fat and sugar it will taste like play dough. Just think how much nutrition comes with this kind of chocolate vs the store bought.

    Hi – am really keen to try this, but what quantities do you use for each ingredient?

      Hey Lisa, I don’t have an exact method I just went by feel and taste, your pallet might be different. Just have a go and test and adjust. Start with a small batch in case you don’t like it, then get creative. The bottom pic has almonds and peanut butter chunks in it. Yummo. R

    Thanks for this info Renee!! Was excited to learn how to make my own chocolate, excellent thinking. Health shop lady also had cacao butter but I reckon coconut oil (odourless) plus stevia will work really well. Plus adfition of nuts and or dried fruit. Excited to try and make it! 🙂
