So anyone who has been to my house would walk out saying, “wow those kids have way too many toy’s!”. This is what happens when you and your husband are from large families so at Christmas and birthday’s the kids get a lot of stuff, so much so that it can become over whelming. Here are my ideas on how to deal with toy over load.
Just before Christmas or a birthday I will do a bit of a secret cull. Anything that is broken, looking old, or missing important parts goes in the bin, anything still good but not loved anymore goes in a donation box. So this always makes room for the new stuff that is coming their way.
Then at Christmas time or a birthday I pop anything they haven’t opened yet, that they wont miss away in a cupboard and get it out in the school holidays and it is suddenly fun and new. Where as if they opened it at Christmas it would have been old news by now and living in a toy box unloved. So as school holidays have started today I grabbed out some of the Christmas presents I saved and the kids are loving their ‘new toys’ that they had forgotten about.
Another method I use is toy rotation. If your kids aren’t really playing with their toys they are just dumping them all over the house and moving on to the next thing, then dumping that, chances are they have too many toys. It’s too much for them, they don’t really need a lot. I have a big plastic tub and I fill it with toys and put it away in the garage where little people have no idea. Then at around the 3 month mark I rotate what’s in their toy boxes with my stash of toys. So all of a sudden the giant pink My Little Pony becomes new and exciting again. I have a toy box in the main living dinning area of our house so any toys left in the lounge room etc can be picked up and shoved in there, as if I am going to pack up everyday and return everything to their rooms, I’m way too busy blogging!
So have a think about toy rotation and give it a go, it works a treat and pays off around school holidays. So when Mr 8 comes to me and says “Mum I’m bored”, I can whip out boxes of Lego that he has forgotten he received, we have a crystal kit to make and a aluminium can robot ready to go.
