IF YOUR LITTLE MUNCHKIN IS TWO AND STILL IN NAPPIES THEN KEEP READING BECAUSE IT’S TIME TO SAY GOODBYE TO NAPPIES FOREVER
Having now owned three two year olds in my time, I have had three different experiences with toilet/potty training. Thought I would share how each different child went so you can feel normal too. Potty training is sh*t, especially with the first kid. You just have no real idea of when or what to do. You will be flooded with well-meaning friends and family members telling you how they did it and at what age. I had some comments such as “mine were all toilet trained by 18months” that scared the shit out of me with Mr (now) 8. So I raced out bought jocks and a potty and started at 18 months. Result, disaster.
POTTY TRAINING TIPS THE THINGS I’VE LEARNT
1. Reward. Find their currency and make it their reward. When ever Mr 2 pees or poohs on the potty he gets a smarty. This jar is in sight as a constant reminder that if you pee on the potty you get a smarty.
2. Potty Where You Are Most. I wanted the potty in the bathroom with my first but I learnt it’s better to have it where you are most of the time where they will see it where they don’t have to run to it.
3. Have Lots Of Shorts & Miniature Underwear. There are going to be heaps of accidents. Don’t tell anyone but I chuck poohed in jocks in the bin, yeah I said that.
4. If They Can’t Sit On The Potty It’s Not Happening. If you start too early and they can’t independently sit on the potty probably wait until they are at least co-ordinated enough to master sitting on it.

TOILET TRAINING TOO EARLY – MR 8
Folded to pressure to start at 18 months, he wasn’t ready, nor was I. I had no idea what to do, he had no clue of his bodily functions. All that happened was he weed all over my carpet everyday and poohed in his jocks everyday. I was working full time and it was a struggle. So we chucked it in and waited until he was two. Went much better, learnt what I was meant to me doing and after a good 3 weeks he had it. However he wet the bed at night, used to sh*t me as this went on for years.
TOILET TRAINING AS A STAY AT HOME MUM -LITTLE MISS 5
By now I had thrown in my career and was on the stay-at-home roller coaster. I laughed at people when they told me to start at 18mths, not doing that to myself again I told them. On her 2nd Birthday together we picked out a pink potty and some knickers and so it began. This kid was a jet, within days she had it, she also held out all night and never wet the bed. Was it because I waited until two, was it because she was a girl? I will never know, but she was a champion.
TOILET TRAINING A STUBBORN POTTY HATER – MR 2
As I am on my eight week course, this 2 year old has ended up in Child Care four days a week so they have scored the job of most of this toilet training. So when he turned two, he was introduced to the potty and wearing jocks. He hated it. Refused to sit on the potty, would get up in the morning and hold everything in until he couldn’t and would pee his pants at 2pm, would hold his pooh until he had a night time nappy on. He is starting to get the hang of it but its been a good four weeks and we still have an accident most days.
In summary, for me my girl was easy the boys were more of an effort. Don’t start too early but at the same time don’t leave it too late. Make it fun with rewards, fight the urge to go nuts at them when they do have an accident. Always have a change of clothes and a spare potty in the back of the car. Enjoy.

Excellent post Renee. Every kid is different, my daughter loved the chocolate reward, my son opted for cash. He got 20cents in five cent pieces every time he went to the toilet worked like a charm, and he loved putting it in the money box we let him pick out.
