Babies are all fun and games, until they start moving around the house on their own, then your life, and decor will have to change! Today’s post is inspired by my gorgeous 7month old niece who is now up and about! So I thought I’d share some tips on baby proofing the house. I don’t think you can go over the top with baby proofing, I think it’s always better to be safe than sorry!
With our kitchen there is no one entry that could be shut off with a baby gate so all the cupboard doors have been fitted with baby proof latches. They were put on for Little Miss 4, but lucky we never got around to taking them off! Plus it’s always fun to watch adults try and open them. The bathrooms are also fitted with child proof latches and anything that could look yummy to a little person, like pink shampoo is up nice and high!
If you have built in robes, or any kind of sliding doors these can be little finger busters, this is overcome with a piece of timber cut to size in order to stop the door from being shut by your little explorer. Don’t use chemicals on the floor as you can bet bubs has tasted most of the house by now.
Every time you hear a door slam you think of little fingers, so to stop this being a worry you can buy these rubber door stops that attach to the door to stop it shutting. If you are at someone’s home who has no need to be so baby proof you can pop a towel on top of the door which will stop it shutting. Which is what they will always want to do, shut or open every kind of door in the house, isn’t learning annoying, I mean fascinating!
Exposed power points need to be covered, kids love to ‘post’ put things in a hole. I remember one day I was sitting at the table doing some work at home and I looked down at Little Miss 4, (18mths at the time) about to shove a pen in the power point. So these were bought and are in every unused power point in our home.
If the laundry door can’t be shut, ensure everything nasty is up high. If you have a front loader make sure the door is shut, a few times I have walked by and I am sure Mr Chilled 1 was just about to climb on in!
I’ve never had to smack them with regards so safety, it’s always been as simple as a loud firm “Ah ah ah, don’t touch” and they will quickly learn the meaning with repetition. Mr Chilled 1, will crawl up to something that he knows he can’t touch he will look up at me and say “ah ah ah, dontuchhhh”, that method has worked with all three, they learn right from wrong very early on. I just wonder if it will work with sex and drugs in their teens?

Great tips! I’m a fan of the towel over the door trick too. More on how to implement the trick (from a childproofing pro) here: http://hintmama.com/2013/12/06/todays-hint-how-to-frugally-protect-little-fingers-from-doors/
