Move Over Quinoa Teff Has Arrived At Coles

I love anything that stands up the name ‘Super Food’ and I love trying them all because it’s great to find one seriously good for you food and I have found a new one I’d like to share with you all today. I am tipping you have not yet heard of these little tiny grains called Teff. Told you.

Coles is introducing the next big ‘Super Food’ Teff. With a kind of nutty flavour, teff can be sprinkled on salads, added to soups or used when baking muesli bars or protein balls. The main reason I am loving teff is because it’s a whole grain high in protein, carbohydrates, and fibre. It contains 8 essential amino acids, that’s some seriously high quality protein. Teff is also seriously rich in calcium and iron. Got your attention? teff

WHAT IS TEFF?

Teff looks like tiny, tiny, tiny, little, little, little brown seeds, something you would empty out of your toddler’s shoes at the end of the day. These seeds pack some serious nutrition so they are worth a shot at getting them in your toddler’s mouth.

WHY INCLUED TEFF TO YOUR DIET?

As I said above, teff is high in protein with a great combination of eight essential amino acids needed for the body’s growth and repair. It has high amounts of calcium, manganese, phosphorous, iron, copper, aluminium, barium, thiamine, and vitamin C (which is not normally found in grains). The iron from teff is easily absorbed and is also recommended for people with low blood iron levels. Ok I’ll stop now but you get the point right, they are pretty super.

HOW TO USE TEFF?

Teff can be made like and used instead of rice. Due to its tiny size, teff cooks faster than most grains so keep your eye on it.  I used one cup of teff to 2 cups of water, it floats first then it seems to absorb the water and turn in to, well mud? Yeah, it looks a bit like mud but don’t let this put you off. I am using it as porridge in the morning, instead of rice at dinner, and in protein balls during the day.

WHERE CAN YOU GET IT?

Coles will be the first major retailer to stock the product in Australia. Coles Brand Brown Teff Grain 500g: $10.99, available nationally how exciting. Check it out by clicking the link here. teff balls

PEANUT BUTTER TEFF BLISS BALLS

YOU WILL NEED:

1 Cup of Teff

3 Tea Spoons of Natural Peanut or Almond Butter

3 Tea Spoons of Coconut Sugar

Desiccated Coconut

1. Cook 1 Cup of Teff in 2 Cups of water, boil and stir until the grains stop floating, the water evaporates and you are left with Teff mud.

2. Add Nut Butter and coconut sugar to taste, I added some chopped walnuts at point and some desiccated coconut to dry the mix out a bit.

3. Roll healthy mud into balls, cover with coconut and enjoy the bliss of something yummy that is in fact so good for you.

I have a sweet tooth craving at the moment so I’m thinking a Dark Chocolate and Coconut Brownie with Teff or Banana Bread with Dark Chocolate Chips and Teff. Savoury I’m thinking a Chili Con Carne using Teff instead of Rice maybe?

Hi Belle Amie can’t wait to try Teff. Our daughter just had a kidney transplant operation. We travel an hour each day to RPA for clinic each day. We both could do with Teff. 🙂 thank you for sharing!

Oh that’s a “Teff” one. Can’t wait to play! Maybe a Mediterranean style dish with roasted vegetables and chicken? I love grinding up seeds and grains and experimenting with flour substitutes. Maybe mix with some almond butter and create some protein cookies? Teff crumble? Possibilities are endless!

I would make a healthy breakfast bar, or protein snack with teff, sounds like it would be a great thing to add to other meals as well.
