Laundry Beautiful, I know oxymoron right! Well it doesn’t have to be! I spend a lot of time in my laundry, with a family of 5 we generate a lot of washing. I find the only way to stay on top of it is to do a load a day. I used to do 4 or 5 huge loads on the weekends but that just ends up overwhelming, a load a day is the way to go.
The best thing that ever happened to our laundry was my 12 year old top loader died. We then bought a front loader and were able to put a bench right over the top of that little sucker which changed the whole look and function of the room. The bench top is from Ikea (of course) and it was only about $80. After my husband installed the bench top it meant I had room to fold up clothes and room to add a few pretty things to make my time in the laundry a little less painful.
Another great buy from Ikea were these shelves and a drying rack. This means with a small load a day sometimes I don’t even have to go outside to hang washing up, the little peoples clothes will all fit hanging up here and get a lot of sun through the glass doors and dry quite fast. The shelves are great for baskets to hold the partners of MIA socks and vases, and the fish bowl for the fish that always die. Wall mounted hooks are also great for hanging stuff up to dry or just getting anything you can off the floor. Keep the bench and floor free of clothes and it will always feel controlled, let it pile up and it becomes a distressing mess!
With the broom cupboard I try to shove everything I can in there, again to keep it off the floor and bench. Shut the door and you only have to see it when you need to get the vacuum or iron out. The mirror below is doing a super job of hiding the taps and pipe running down to the machine.
So have another look at your laundry, there are some simple ways to make it a laundry Martha Stewart would be proud of. Swap the ugly Omo box for a cute glass jar just for that lux feel. Pop some prints up on the walls to brighten the place up, if building or renovating keep colours neutral, use a mirror to reflect light to make the space feel bigger and brighter. Make these simple changes and doing the washing will be a pleasure, ok I am stretching the truth but it does make a difference I promise!
