How To Make Oatmeal Your New BFF

Everyday I have the same boring old breakfast, Oatmeal, sounds pretty lame right, wrong! I have found away to make this stuff taste so good you will think you are actually eating some kind of dessert. I have shared my breakfast on the blog before and it seems to have everyone guessing as I have received many emails asking me allsorts of questions about it. So today I am going to show anyone new to oats or who was forced to eat them as a kid how to make a really healthy delicious breakfast of Oatmeal.

Don’t be scared of oats, they take 2 minutes to make, 1min10sec in the microwave and 50 seconds to add the other yummy stuff. No stove, no stiring, just oats milk and a microwave while you make your morning tea or coffee. Here are the things you may like to try, all are cheap and all are available from the Supermarket. In fact the oats are under $2 for the bag so each serve is possibly costing you a whopping 15cents.

Here is step by step what I do:

  • 1/3 cup oats, only 100% Wholegrain Oats, (this means nothing has been taken out of it and nothing artificial has been added).
  • I use Almond milk, it just gives it a unique sweet taste. You can use any kind of milk, Soy, Cows etc. You can even use apple juice instead of milk.
  • Cover oats with the milk, pop in microwave for 1min10sec (that’s how long for my microwave).
  • Once done I add say 1 tbls of Vanilla Protein Powder, 1 tbls of Linseed, Sunflower seed and Almond meal (LSA), 1 tsp Chia Seeds, sprinkle of cinnamon. So now you have added protein and omega’s (healthy fat’s).
  • Then for a crunch I add almonds and for vitamin C I add banana or blueberries. See how we have added no sugar or honey.

That’s how easy it is, honestly it tastes better than toast and it’s a really healthy start to the day. Your body is more receptive to nutrients after the night long fast so what a great way to cover off on all the food groups in one little bowl of awesomeness! Still not convinced, Oatmeal has been proven to reduce cholesterol and lower risk of heart disease, it contains vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, great for weight loss as it contains soluble fiber which will keep you fuller for longer! Can’t beat that can you?

    i have been eating this for breakfast everyday for almost a month now, its sooo yummy! i also added lentils into my pumpkin soup after reading your tip, now if only i can stop giving in to my cravings!!

    Thanks so much Renee, I have bought all of these, just my oats seems to take too long to cook?Even tried n the stove I may have been trying to cook too much 1 and 1/2 cup to one milk?

      Linda, all I can think of is 1.5 cups is a lot, I only have say 1/2 a cup it’s just so filling. I’ve never messured the milk I just cover the oats so they are all swiming. Took me a while to get the time right on the microwave. I’ve even over cooked them and they turn in to one big yucky pancake thing!!! Stick at it until you find what works for you. R

    I am new to your blog (found it through the organised housewife and it resonated strongly with me) and on a weight loss mission post having my son last year. I have lost 7kg in the last couple of months through eating clean food and running – mainly through dietary adjustment/reducing the carbs significantly – as they say – a six pack is made in the kitchen not the gym. I have about 5kg to lose and still working on the six pack. I loved the picture of you looking so fabulous in your Losing the Baby Weight blog post. I have read most of your blog and it inspired me on with my running and to properly shave and moisturise my legs, go and get a pedicure, eyebrow wax and my paint my fingernails with clear polish today. I have become so much more complacent in these areas since having my son and it is something I really need to get on top of as it gets me down. Re porridge, I prefer to make my porridge on the stove. It doesn’t take very long and I am nervous about what the microwave does to the food. I am not sure about the almond milk for carb reasons and have recently shifted to full fat cow’s milk because I have read that it tends to be much purer. But I love the suggestions you make re protein power, chia seeds and LSA. Delicious and so healthy. I plan on making a protein pancake tomorrow. Thanks very much and I look forward to reading more of your thoughts on living well.
