This post in a reader request, hope it can give you some new ideas
Going away with the family can be a lot of fun, but it can also cause you and your family to make some cheap and nasty food choices whether on the road trip on the way to the holiday or grabbing take-a-way each night after a long day of sight seeing. Keep reading for what I’ve found works when heading off on a family holiday with the kids.
1. Be Prepared.Take what you can from home so you don’t get caught out, take the 5 minutes to grab some staples that you know the kids will eat I like to load up a tub with bits and pieces from home. Start putting some tought in to what you will eat each night, if you leave it to right before feeding time someone will talk you in to greasy burgers, opt for a roast chicken and salad from coles.
2. Slow Cooker. Part of being on a holiday is you don’t want to cook so it becomes too easy to grab some kind of junk food for dinner each night. I have the answer and I bet you’ve never packed this bad boy before, the slow cooker! Yes dig out the slow cooker and take her on your holiday if you are in a hotel/ apartment anywhere with electricity it will cook dinner for you while you are out sight seeing all day. The beauty of a slow cooker is you just chuck in raw foods come back a few hours later and it’s a healthy wholesome meal for hungry holiday makers. Three of my favourites are spaghetti bolognese, tuna mornay and lasagna all cooked in the slow cooker with no prep just plopping the raw ingredients stir turn on and leave it.
3. Enjoy But Don’t Binge. Rules still apply just because you are away, don’t pig out on party food. Instead of a bag of chips or cookies buy a bag of carrots or snow peas, no I’m serious, carrots give you the crunch, and snow peas give you the sweet. You can still have some treats with the kids of course but don’t kid yourself just because you are on Holiday’s and over do it.
4. Don’t Forget To Eat. When on holidays there is lots of sight seeing to do, swimming in the hotel pool, fun outdoor activities all these things keep you busy, you forget to eat, you realise you are starving you pig out on the first thing you get your hands on. Take fruit and rice crackers when you go out to always have something handy for you and the kids to munch on.
5. Stay Hydrated. Plane rides can be very dehydrating, take a bottle of water for each family member. Sip on water all the time, this is not a good time to let yourself get a head ache from being dehydrated.
When away from home or eating out isn’t an excuse to eat badly, don’t undo all your hard work by eating crap. It will take some forethought to come up with meal ideas but it is worth the effort. If you eat crap everyday/night you will feel like crap. So have a plan before you go, even sit down and work out a meal plan, if it has to be take-a-way chose the best foods you can over nasty junk foods. If you are lugging the kids along you might like this post traveling wiith kids.

So hard to eat well on holidays. Especially when you are stuck at the airport because your plane had been delayed and all there is, is Maccas or Hungry Jacks! Arrrgh! Have eaten the chicken wrap, which seems the safest option…
