How many times a day do your kids, or husband, say in the most annoying voice, “I’m hungry, what can I eat?”. To stop them eating crap (chips, biscuits etc), I just don’t even buy that way it stops me eating it too. What I do is fill the fridge, at kids eye level with healthy yummy kid friendly foods.
Do you start out with good intentions, buy a heap of fruit but it doesn’t end up getting eaten, goes bad and ends up in the bin? You are not alone, it happens in most homes, so I am working on ways to stop wasting food. As soon as I bring the shopping home, I do a few things before I put the kettle on. If there is anything that can only be eaten by preparing it, as in cooking or chopping it, then that’s what I do. If I don’t do it, it wont get done and the kids will fill up on bread when they could be filling up on vitamin C. For example, I chop up the water melon or rock melon as soon as I bring it in. That way I know it will get eaten.
I make a little snack attack area at the bottom of the fridge so it’s the first thing the kids see when they open the fridge door! I boil some eggs, put them in a clear container, chop melons pop them in a clear container, and fill an easy access basket with fruit. This way they can fend for themselves when they are hungry. So if your tots open the fridge stand there swinging on the door letting all the cold air out moaning, “What can I eat Mum?”, give it a try, make a snack attack area in your fridge for their hungry bellies. Now if they come up to me I point them to the snack attack shelf and they grab out what they want, and I continue to blog blog blog!!!
